Sad when you think of all the work that doubtless went into getting into Star Fleet, not washing out, getting a plumb assignment to the flagship, and then it's all over in a phasered instant.
No doubt there is an enlisted Star Fleet academy program, and an unenlisted - or Red Shirt - program.
