Space Ship Time Schedule

Alas, Jeremy A. Shapiro, I doubt your reservation to any of these destinations will be met within your lifetime. What once seemed an inevitable conquest of the solar system has turned into a silent program of satellite launches. Nixon has a large part to play in this shame, for shame, yet again, Tricky Dick. You ruined so much.
Click for big of course - as with all photos here at Redshirt's Lament. Supposedly these are all the ships of Sci Fi as of 2003, to scale. A nerd's delight.

Sci Fi has kept our dreams alive - I mean this literally, as in our genes want to leave this planet, must leave this planet if they are to live forever. We will be driven to do so if we have the technology to make it possible, eventually. Sci Fi movies and shows keep this reminder in the public mind, regardless of actual progress.

Already Assimilated

A map showing McDonald's locations across the Contiguous 48. As you can see, they're everywhere, so much so that the small gaps jump out in contrast. National Parks, barren wastelands, roadless stretches of nature. For now - just you wait, Adirondack Park! Mickey D's will find you, eventually.

Now, like most everyone, I used to go to McDonald's all the time. As a kid it was a huuuuge treat. Not only for the burgers, fries and shakes, but oh yes, the once awesome Happy Meals:
Mint condition - part of some huge Trek nerd's collectible hoard. Marvel at the detail, the quality craftsmanship. I've seen today's Happy Meals, and like most everything else in our society, they've been cheapened and dumbed down. Profit margins, dawg.

Red Power (Fresh Gagh)

Nothing better for a growing young man than fresh blood gagh, a true warrior's meal. Add in some P'Tak Fingers and Blue Milk and you've got all the makings of a balanced Ginger's breakfast.

Gingers. Freaky folks, right? Everyone knows it. But now, a bold prediction! Gingers are about to become "It" - Red Power is rising. Here's why:

Neanderthals. Cave people. The formerly stupid and dumb brutes who, the story went, died out at the hands of the vastly superior human, homo. Us - we rule!

But we're learning more and more about them - that's what science does, after all. And not only have we recently learned they were often redheads, but that they were already dying out well before humans arrived in Europe. And most importantly, they didn't completely die out, as Neanderthals and humans mated, and had children, and those children had children, and so on, all the way to us.

The twist? There were other, different ancient human species in other parts of the world - the Denisovans lived in Asia, and they too mated with the humans who moved into the region, passing on their genetic code.

In Africa, however, the domination of Homo Humans was long complete, and there were no other human species for hundreds of thousands of years. And thus, Africans are the "purest" humans, as both Asians and Europeans have "cavemen" genes. Or so this theory goes.

Since the racists of both continents will not allow this to stand, I predict these ancient human relatives - Neanderthals and Denisovans - will get a major upgrade in reputation, and become strong, intelligent, generally awesome and something to aspire to, and yay, verily, red hair will be the surest sign of these desirable caveman traits, as it is believed the gene for red hair came from the Neanderthals. Can't have Africans being superior or, EGADS! Purer now, amirite?

But it's true. Truth doesn't matter to racists, though. And genes are just genes and it is we, humans across the world, who decide what it's going to be. Sadly, we're easy to predict.

From Mind to Life (A Fantasy)

From a sketch poured forth from the brain of a nerd to a...
To a model constructed by more nerds to...
To a representation of reality on a fictional TV show that has inspired millions for decades, directly shaping our current technology, so in part...
To some nerd's computer skills ably demonstrated in variations on the classic Klingon Battle Cruiser.  And who knows where that nerd will take those skills into the future, maybe even doing something of real value to the world, rather than a wondrous indulgence in fantasy.

Speaking of, I think my season ends tonight, barring a miracle. Woe! Once again all my cunning plans are foiled tragically in the end. I never learn, however.

Klingon Derivations

Truly, a terrifying spectacle. Burger King Klingons. Magical, menacing monsters of burgers and space.
This, too, is a thing on the internets: Mods of "My Pretty Pony" dolls. There's all kinds of crazy ones out there. But this post is about Klingons, not foolish dolls!

Modern mythology, spreading across the nations via the Internet. Comicons are spiritual gatherings akin to Druid partays of yore. Or maybe not.

Klingon Smorgasbord

Klingon is not just an unrealistic alien species, but also a language. A real language, with grammar rules and gerunds and all that shit. "Tah Pagh Tahbe'" translates to "To Be or Not To Be". Oh look, Shakespeare in the original Klingon:
An actual production of Hamlet, in Klingon. Odd, is it not? Consider the utter luxury of it! That we (as a species, as a society) have such spare time as to learn a real language from a fictional universe and make a play of it. Or performance art:
It's decadent, really. And completely wonderful. This is how a species advances - by exploring all kinds of weird shit. Who knows what will turn up? Or who will be inspired by what. For example:
Imagine ballin' down Main Street in this Bird of Prey! You'd get pulled over and hassled eventually, for sure, but even then, it'd be pretty sweet. I'd just start cold blastin' everything in my path, Klingon style.
Klingon style. Kahless bless them.

Klingon ladies all classy like

Everything's classy in painting form (well done, of course). I wonder what she's embroidering?
The noble Princess B'rianna, 16th century AK (After Kahless), brief ruler of a small moon in the P'tak! system.

Klingon edition of Playboy, centerfold 1971 AK, B'r'andi, who likes a strong man and dislikes cowards.

Familial Honor

Honor is such a loaded concept. It can cause people to perform heroic deeds of selflessness, but it can also cause a man to throw acid on the face of a woman. But then, perhaps that's the human condition in a nutshell.

There but for the grace of Gak

Kahless bless her heart - and I mean that sincerely. It takes a lot of self confidence and/or social retardation to dress up like this. And I applaud her for it, as I applaud all the nerds dressing up as fictional characters - for each of them have crossed the inner line that mocks and critiques. These courageous nerds have affirmed: "I don't care what they say. I'm dressing up as a Pink Klingon!"

Klingon Smoove

I would ask you Worf, how are you going to pay for a fancy yacht? Federation Officers make exactly nada. Try the High Council if you're looking for some bling.

"taH pagh taHbe'!"

You might be surprised at the number of people worldwide who speak and/or write Klingon. Nerds everyone of them, no doubt.

The title is "To be or not to be" in the original Klingon.

Stop the Presses!

The newspaper is not long for this earth. Given terrible papers like the Washington Post or the Washington Times, I'm tempted to say, good riddance. But what this will really do is remove whatever, if any, scrutiny pols at all levels of government receive. No local scandal, no payback schemes, no school board hi-jinks. Overall, the loss of the newspaper is going to be a bad trip for free expression. I'm doubtful the web will be able to fill that role.
