Dark Omens

Recent protest in Greece. Not sure which one exactly, because they've been protesting pretty much non-stop for about 5 years. Economic austerity imposed on them from Germany, however, has made the protests of the past few years much more intense.

But protests are protests, and Greece is pretty good at them. What's new is a dark and foreboding development:

Greek NAZIs. The Golden Dawn is ostensibly a political party, but really it's a fascist gang that uses waaaay too many NAZI symbols for any sane collection of people. They've become emergent as the Greek economy has crashed, and in the time tested tactic of all nationalist fascist groups, have used the fear/hate of foreigners as a rallying cry to swell their numbers. They've become a paramilitary force, for example. Witness:

See the black clad goons along the wall? Golden Dawn "Security". Brownshirts, in other words, who have been tied to many assaults and crimes.

It's easy to see the formula at work: Tough economic times create a sense of helplessness, and predatory groups use this feeling to channel their anger towards an "other" - almost always a foreigner of some sort. By joining with other like minded nationalist "patriots" attacking the "decadent Others", folks get a sense of belonging and lose their feelings of helplessness. And thus armies of fascists are formed.

But its not all lost in Greece.

You can see where totems got their inspiration in the mirror form of still lakes and sea shores. When the water is as glass, reflecting everything above, like the green here of Summer, near full Moon, the full skeletal reproduction is seen by all, and copied by most - why not? Success is leached.

Of Interest Perhaps Only To Me

Click for big! My discovery, simple minded as it is, was that the Sun moves all over the sky.

Having lived in cities for many years, I never saw the path of the Sun through the seasons. But now, high up in New Gondolin, I see the Sun go from Winter left to Summer Right, booking across the sky. Of course it is we - The Earth - that is moving, not the Sun, but hard to deny the illusion.

So you see above half my year. That is the Winter Sun, 2011. The dates above the other mountains cover the sunsets to come/gone. Spring/Fall is a magical spot there in the hollow of the closest mountain.

 Seeing the rhythms of our planet play out every night, every year, is awesome. Man.

Stuff in the Sky

Moonrise! Bright as a star. Fun fact to ponder - the light from the Moon is reflected light from the Sun. This light was created in the center of the Sun millions of years ago, finally escaped, streamed across space, hit the moon and bounced off, right into your eye. Where it bounces off again, but the energy is translated by your brain as... Moonlight.

The ISS, racing across the sky. There's six people up in there! Also, that sure looks like the Northern Lights, but I didn't see it with my eyes. So that's either a trick of light and clouds, or the Northern Lights can appear below my vision's threshold, but can show up on a longer exposure.

Moonset, an hour after an August Sunset. Fun project if you have a view of the Western horizon and some time - note how Moonset shifts over the year. You might be surprised!

But these same deplorable trends affect poor whites too, but hey, vote Republican!

Think how warped and twisted you have to be to get so angry over the possibility of high speed rail. I'LL NEVER GET ON A TRAIN OBAMA!!!

These poor whites who vote - who live - Republican have been so bamboozled, so brainwashed by the dual poison of Religion and Racism that they will cut off their nose - Gladly! - as long as it means black folk will suffer too.
