I've never actually met someone who dresses up as a Stormtrooper, but I suspect, in part, they enjoy the camaraderie of Grunts. This is the Fodder-Bonding that can be found among any group of usually young males tasked with manual, possibly lethal work. There is a freedom found in relinquishing your individuality and giving yourself to the Collective, the group, the Stormtrooper Legion.

I'm a big fan of this bonding, in concept. It's a herding instinct and is quite powerful. The same applies with the idea of "Redshirt", but it will never be as popular as Stormtroopers, owing to the lack of cool body armor. So it goes - I bet on the wrong horse.
